| Someone may have a question in their mind that how hilltribe people can do farming such a high hill like that. It was very high and steep place. But for hilltribe people, it was easy work for them. Mowing before burning was the old way of agriculture which descended from generation to generation. They mowed for planting and burned in summer before raining in order to increase the natural essential elements in the soil. In previous time, people did not need the chemical fertilizer for their crops. Moreover, they only used their own wisdom for planting. They would change the cultivated area every year and left the old land to recover for a few year. It was called circle cultivation. Forest officers informed the villagers that they did not be allowed to do farming in their area although it was their land for long time. Circle cultivation nowadays was regarded as forest destruction. Furthermore, the evolution of agriculture was proceeding rapidly; farming innovation was produced to increase the number of crop. Thus, the chemical substance was inevitable for cultivation. Maybe, the new innovation could not get along well with their wisdom. For example, the scholar announced that burning the field was not good for soil. This idea was reasonable to believe because there were lot of academic evidences to support this idea. So, it made the villagers turned to use the chemical fertilizer in their farming. It was efficient in first few year, but after that bad matter appeared. The soil quality was getting down. When the soil was ineffient, more chemical substance needed although its cost increased. One problem that farmers suffered was the capital was high but the crop price was getting down. Hence, they demanded the government to help and support their product. But the problem was not be solved at all. Finally, the new way of agriculture was presented. The scholars told the farmers that they should use natural fertilizer in contrast the media also advertised about the benefit of using chemical fertilizer. It was big improvement to change from chemical fertilizer to the natural one because it took time for the soil to recover. Lastly, there still were no suitable solution for them. In previous time, buffalo was the important thing in farming. They used for plowing the paddy but nowadays the plowing machine was used instead to save the time. Finally, the old way of farming returned because it was appropriate to their original way of life. |
