Life style : Lahu- Animaltraps

Lahu peole are intelligent and proficient in hunting for their food. There are many animaltraps around the forest.
Haow Tae We
It is used for trapping big animal such as wild boar, deer, tiger, etc.
The sharp wooden string will rush toward the animals when they hook the string that causes death finally. Lahus always put the traps on the sideways or the area that they see the animal footprints. It is the signal that they will walk around again. Lahus believe that barking deers live in group and like to go together because they fear stepping on the millipede. So, Lahus will trap this kind of animal. It is Lahu’s long believed since their ancestors that Lahus always laid the traps along animal sidewalk.
They sharpen the bamboo stick and bine it by sting. The bamboo stick will strike toward animals’ stomach or heart. In addition, there is one sting obstructing the sidewalk that makes the sharpen stick rushes to the animal violently and causes death.

Wild Fowl Trap (Hae Nga Wa)

It is used to catch especially the fowls which find for their food on the ground such as wild fowl. Before trapping, Lahus will mow clearly in a line and put the gress arond both side of line but they have to remain the blank space for the fowl to walk to the trap. The equipment name “Lao Joo” is made from the sharpen bamboo. It is in a curve shape tying together and round up by sting or liana. Moreover, Lao Joo needs one metre stick to insert tightly in the ground. Lao Joo is tied on the tip of the stick and is bent to the ground. It is locked by the clasper. Lao Joo also has a ring which is fit to the fowls’ head. The ring is in the head level. When the fowls walk around, their head will stick in the ring. They will walk continuously to free themselves from the ring. On the other hand, the clasper will get loose and spring up that made the head is trapped with the ring. Finally, the fowls are trapped with the stick hanging in the air.
Bird Trap (Hwa Kae Nae)
Hwa Kae Nae is used for birds trapping by using the insects to be the bait. Those insects may be the moth (Wa Pu Fai) or chrysalis (War Wa Pu Ma). These insects are found in provisional period, so bird trapping always does in this time. Some Lahu people can keep these insects for many days or a month by putting in the young bamboo cylinder. It can be kept for long time if the bamboo is changed frequently. Lahus will cling the insects with the trap. When the birds see the wriggly insects, they will get closer to eat by not knowing that it is a trap. Mostly, the legs or necks are easily to be trapped. The most suitable time for trapping by using the moth is the early morning. Lahus will lay the traps along the sideways and wait until it works. This kind of trap is tiny, so it is easy to carry. They can use 20-30 traps in one time.
For using chrysalis, Lahu people always do when they go out for cultivation. They will lay the trap down on the roadside or shady river. When lunchtime coming, they will come to see if the trap work or not. If they get bird, they will bring it for cooking and also change the new bait. Additionally, before going back home in the evening, they will check he traps again. This method of trapping can be used for many days.
Bird Trap (Hwa Ka Nu)
It especially used for big bird by placing on the tree. This kind of trap is always used in fruit time. Lahu will use spacial kind of fruit called “A Na Ka Seu” which is red and has the same size as egg. Birds like this fruit. Lahu people put this fruit inside the trap. When the bird sees the fruit, they will come and eat it. While the bird coming, they will step on the sting that causes the wooden stick fall and press the bird’s neck or body. The wooden stick will clip the bird with the trap and the bird will die at last. In addition, this trap can use for other animals such as rat, squirrel or other animals which find for their food on the ground. This trap can put in the area which is expected that the animal will walk around.
