Musical Instrument



Reed Organ (Nor)
  Materials
  1. a gourd(Aee Mao Ko)
  2. Sharp bamboo-bar (Po or Maf-woo)
  3. Bees wax (Pae Bi Hor)
How to make
  1. Bore a hole in both sides of dry gourd.
  2. Take the gourd seed out.
  3. Cut 5 bars of bamboo which are descending a regular order. Two longest bars have the same length.
  4. Insert the bamboo bars into the holes.
  5. Apply the bees wax in the hole in order to make it tight.
Mostly, it is played in New Year and general occasions also.
Ja Ko          Materials
  1. A big size of heardwood
  2. Oxhide or deer skin
  3. Sting
  4. Knife
  5. Ax
  6. Chisel
  7. Rattan
  8. Bees wax
  9. A fragment of glass or Ma Nod leaf
How to make
  1. Cut the hardwood  in appropriate size.
  2. Carve it in round shape
  3. Bore inside
  4. Cover  the top of the drum by the oxhide or deer skin and pull it tight.
  5. Apply bees wax in the middle of oxhide or deer skin to bring sweet sound.
  6. Coil the oxhide with string.
  7. Make a shoulder-strap for a drum.
  8. Rub the body with fragment of glass or Ma Nod leaf.
This kind of drum only use in religious ceremony such as in New Year and Holy days which occur two days a month ( 15 th waxing and waning moon day )
Bamboo FluteLahu’s bamboo flutr are divided into 4 kinds which are single, two, three and four holes.
Materials
  1. Bamboo
  2. Pointed knife
How to make
    • Cut the bamboo-flask depend on the kind of flute; short cut if it is single hole flute and add the length if it has more than two holes.
    • Drill a hole by a pointed knife. Each hole must has equal gap.
    • Test the sound by blowing. If the sound is not quite good , cut the tip of the flute until it makes sweet sound. This flute can be played in evey occasions depending on the abiliy of the players.
Jing Nong ( Ar Ta )
Materials
    1. bamboo
How to make
  1. Cut a span-length of bamboo for Ar Ta case.
  2. Cleave two pieces of bamboo which are an inch width and 15 centimeters length.
  3. Sharpen the tip of both bamboo pieces for snap.
  4. Sharpen an inch long slimly the same bamboo again.
  5. Chop the bamboo into 3 pieces which are 3  inch- length. The tip of each piece are cut and sharpen which are an inch a half long.
Jing Nong can be played in anywhere and anytime like flute.
Gong ( Bo Ko Lo ) and cymbal ( Lae Sae )

Gong and cymbal are the musical instrument which the villagers cannot afford. They have to buy fom outside shop or exchange with foreign people because the raw materials are hard to find. Gong and cymbal are used in New Year ( Kho Ja We ) ceremony. To Bo, religioud leader, is the person who beat the gong while the rite occures.

How to make
  1. Cut one piece of hardwood in suitable thickness.
  2. Create the body of guitar.
  3. Head part : bore six pairs of holes and insert the sharp bamboo.
  4. Body        : pull the wood  out in circle.
  5. Cover with wood and puncture 9-10 small holes to make a sound.
  6. String the wire tightly and pass it through six bored holes.
This local guitar can play in general period.

Rice Flute ( Lae Loo )

The process of making is like Lae Ko Zui but it is different in raw material. It  uses rice instead of wood. It is significant for the rice to have at least onr joint and flute valve. Rice flute is played in harvest time only because it is rare to find rice in other seasons. Lahu people believe that if there are something wrong about their paddy farming, they will blow the flute and it will be rain on that day suddenly.
Leaf Blowing ( Ar Pha Mer We )

Materials
    1. small thin leaf
How to blow
  • For single leaf, we have to fold in a half and blow at a fold.
  • For double leaves, lay the round wood on one leaf and for another one , blow in a fold spot.    It can be played anytime.
